Let's Keep Things Safe: How To Prevent Gun Accidents During The Holidays
If you own guns, you know how important it is to protect your family against accidents. However, now that the holidays are fast approaching, you'll probably be having guests in for parties. Unfortunately, they may not be as well-educated about gun safety as you are. They may also have young children who may be curious about guns. If you're going to be having guests in during the holidays, you need to take additional steps to safeguard against gun accidents. Here are four simple steps you can take to prevent gun accidents:
Have Sufficient Gun Safes
If you own guns, you need to make sure that you have sufficient safes for the weapons you own. Not only that, but you need to ensure that all your guns are locked safely away while your guests are present. If you regularly carry a concealed weapon, make sure you keep it holstered and on your body at all times when you're out among your guests. Even if you're used to taking it off and setting it on the table from time to time, your guests won't be used to that. Leaving your gun out provides the perfect opportunity for curious hands to get a hold of it.
Make Certain Rooms Off-Limits
If your gun safes are located in a specific room of the house, make that room off-limits during the festivities. It's better to keep the doors closed and the kids out, than to worry that someone might be finding their way into your gun safes, or worse, finding one that hadn't been locked away. Once your guests leave, you can open your rooms up again.
Educate Your Kids
If you've got kids, you need to get them involved in the gun safety rules. Make sure you educate them about gun safety, as well as what to do should they see someone near your gun safes. It's also important that you teach your kids the importance of letting you know when someone asks them to see your weapons. Accidents can happen when children get curious about guns and ask to see them. If your kids know to seek you out immediately, you can avoid potential devastation.
Keep an Eye on Things
Kids and guns don't mix. If you've got guns in your house, you need to be able to keep an eye on them during the festivities. A good way to do that is with a security camera. Install a video camera in your room, and put the monitor somewhere that it will be easy for you to access. The video feed will allow you to monitor your room throughout the festivities.
